about

"Psychotic" - Billy Bultheel

"Feverish anti-pop" - aqnb.com

"Eurovision 2020 is the new high-intensity album from Mary Posa, released on the occasion of the now-postponed Eurovision 2020 song contest in Rotterdam.

In Eurovision 2020, Mary Posa has made the gnarliest of cover albums. This 17-track electronic smash-and-grab takes as its starting point the Junior Eurovision Song Contest of 2007 that was also held in Rotterdam, the artist’s city of residence. Each Junior Eurovision finalist of 2007 has been remixed and reimagined anew, with song titles corresponding to the contestants’ countries and English translations of songs – geo-politics at Europe’s least relevant hour.

Eurovision 2020 sounds like a carnival trapped inside a nightclub being played backwards on magnetic tape. Fourteen seconds of peace is all you’ll get from the opening track “Georgia - Give it to Me and Run”. In “Serbia - Are You Okay” a ketamine-y angel serenades the listener through the gentle glitches, then the club-drugged strobe vibe ramps up with the Netherlands’ contribution, a stroopwafel shake up – as if oompa loompas are racing around mixing cocktails inside Mario Kart. (Get the gold coins.) Belgium has all the cheese of The Blaze sampling Freddie Mercury before someone passes the helium and Red Bull. In Russia I’m stuck on the merry-go-round and the oompa loompas are probably just children. Only the children are allowed into Bulgaria, it seems, and they’re locked into a glockenspiel breakdance cypher. Here Mary Posa has written the opening jingle of a 1980s rural news telecast and cut it into drum n base. By Macedonia Eurotrash has well and truly kicked in with the pop-party banger that sparkles, descends, lets its shoelaces come undone and sees them unravel into a wonderfully wonky solo piano finale.

Sweden is all heavy metal heart and pacing. Iezzi dares to throw a wink backwards to his punk drummer secret history; in the meantime, Shogun from Royal Headache has had his nosed pushed into a mountain of speed and is singing a cappella. Greece tilts towards a drunken pop anthem but turns out to be a huge joke until it hits the one-minute mark and Mary Posa gives you the most delightful pocket of dance to be had. Bouncey bouncey, in Lithuania there’s a baby stuffie stuck inside of Iezzi’s head dancing Footwork with rubber-soled shoes soft-style.

Mary Posa won’t let you settle. It’s 8am and you’ve already had too much coffee. Turn it up and fuck off the neighbours. Fuck covid, fuck cancellations, it’s Eurovision season. Entirely self-produced, Eurovision is a remarkable exercise in sound and texture ;)"
